1. Tell us about yourself and your childhood?
I am Anthony San, born and raised in the Des Moines, Iowa! I am a caregiver at Metro Kids and the Breakdancing coach of the Harding Breakerz at Harding Middle School (2 and a half years) and I am a dance instructor at BU Dance Company (1st year) and Des Moines Social Club (4th year). I love working with kids and love dancing. I am the youngest of 5 children, a son of 2 immigrants who fled from Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge. I have 3 siblings from 3 different countries Cambodia, Thailand (2), and the US. I was doing whatever my brothers were doing. If they were into sports, so was I. I did basketball, football and wrestling. I was outgoing and enjoyed the outdoors with my neighborhood friends.
2. Tell us a about a challenging time in your life and what lessons you learned from it?
I have had many challenges, but I’d say my life before I started teaching Breaking (Breakdancing) was going absolutely nowhere and I had nothing going for me. I learned to reach out to friends and know that they care about me. I got into some trouble, but I had to keep fighting and finding my path and reach for goals.
3. What motivates you to follow and pursue your passion?
Knowing that there aren’t many people like me who do their best to better their community and work with the youth and try to keep a positive impact. There are many kids who go through trouble in life and all they need is some guidance and I know how these kids are and know how to motivate them to be where they need to be. I got to take 7 Harding Breakerz to perform at The White House in front of Michelle Obama and guests. (As shown in the picture below)
4. What advice would you give to the new up and coming artist?
"No matter how many times you feel like you’ve failed, No matter how many people are doing similar work as you, Keep pushing forward and get after your goals. Push yourself beyond your limits and expectations".
5. Have you or how do you do you contribute to the community?
I have contributed to the community by working with youth and sometimes it isn’t a paid job, and it’s just refreshing to see people wanting to learn from me or wanting to be better at something or finding a passion after working with me.
6. Who do you look up to besides your parents?
My siblings and a few fellow B-boys like my friend Monki from KC. Who has such a great positive energy and always helping others and wanting to better them.
7. What are your goals in the next 5 years?
I want to eventually be a full-time dancer and own my own studio. I want to keep making a positive impact on the youth and the city of Des Moines. It’s going to be a lot of hard work and determination, but there is always a way.
8. What is your motto in life?
“T e a c h P e a c e”
9. How long have you known Made4Mankind Clothing?
I believe 2 full years now.
10. What do you know about Made4Mankind Clothing?
They are a great couple of people who work hard and show so much love and give so much love to local artists. They’ve done a lot for me such as make shirts for my students and me for our White House performance. They have the sexiest clothing line in Des Moines HANDS DOWN!
11. What is your favorite apparel from Made4Mankind Clothing and why?
I loved my first ever purchase from them. My black snapback I got from them 2 years ago at my work. I checked them out and liked their name and their designs. It led to a great friendship and they sponsor me now. My last shirt I got from them is very close behind. “Made in the Streets” because I am a bboy and that’s where I made a name for myself at festivals like 80/35 and 515 Alive.
12. If you could do a collaboration with Made4Mankind Clothing, what kind of apparel would you choose and why? (T-shirt, Hat, Accessories, Etc.)
Shoes because we gotta compete against Big Ballers Brand! Or T-shirts because they’ve made a couple of good ones for Harding Breakerz and Harding Middle School. They are very creative with their shirt designs.
Asan has the motivation and eagerness to teach others, specially the younger generation. He give them the opportunity to find a positive outlet allowing them to gain confidence and self worth. Asan and his students had the extravagant opportunity to show off their talents and dance at the White House in front of the first lady Michelle Obama.
