NICOLE FRANKLIN (SALON OWNER/COSMETOLOGIST)
1. Tell us about yourself and your childhood?
My name is Nicole Franklin. I’m an only child and was born in a small town in Northern Iowa. I moved to Des Moines when I was 4 years old and I’ve always stood out as being a little different. Going home for holidays were always difficult because I never fit it. My “little different” became who you see today and what everyone enjoys the most about me.
2. Tell us about a challenging time in your life and what lessons you learned from it?
Life is always going to be difficult. So when you find yourself in a very hard time, where things don’t seem manageable, wait 24 hrs before making any decisions, see if you feel the same.
3. How or what started your passion?
I’ve always loved hair but having my kids at a young age and being a single mom made it impossible for me to go to cosmetology school while working. I still stayed very creative with my own style and those around me but was eventually able to go to school a little later in life. I’m glad I waited because in doing so, I think it gave me the maturity I needed to start my own business immediately after graduation.
4. What motivates you to follow and pursue your passion?
Fashion is everything to me. Hairstyles, hair color, new trends with hair, all fall into fashion. Music is another thing that motivates me every day and style and fashion fall into music culture as well. Being able to help others find their style to fit what they find is their trend truly brings joy to my heart.
5. What advice would you give to the new up and coming artist?
"BE A SPONGE"
Learn from anyone and everyone in your field including people who have less experience than you. We all learn in different ways and we all excel in different ways, so getting input from anyone and everyone is important. Push your self to learn every day and to seek education from different parts of the United States and the world if necessary.
6. What is the best advice would you give to your younger self?
You don’t have to be afraid of change. Change or what I like to call, shifting, is painful but is the most amazing feeling at the end. And it’s 100% OK to be your true self.
7. Have you or how do you do you contribute to the community?
I’ve donated a lot of my time working with groups who work with women and teenagers to help boost confidence and self image awareness. I also am part of the national eating disorder association and the Iowa eating disorder coalition.
8. Who do you look up to besides your parents?
My kids. Being a business owner has its ups and downs but at the end of the day, they are my biggest supporters and fans. Even on the promoter side of my business. I look up to them because they always stay positive and see the good intention in everything I do, even if it doesn’t work out.
9. What are your goals for the next 5 years?
Continue to grow my salon clientele and to do more events promoting. Enjoy life!
10. What is your motto in life?
"Trust someone only as much as they show you they can be trusted."
11. How did you find out about Made4Mankind Clothing?
I was walking in my neighborhood and came across the shop. Walked in and introduced myself to Awon. Our energy flowed and the business mentality was there.
12. What do you know about Made4Mankind Clothing?
It stands for culture and diversity. Bringing together everyone. Supporting local artists.
