SAMANTHA COX (BEAUTY INFLUENCER)

"A freelance makeup artist is an individual who performs makeup on clients on a freelance basis rather than working for a beauty salon on a permanent employment basis. The basic duties of a freelance makeup artist are no different from a regular permanently employed artist."

1.)Tell us about yourself and your childhood?

My name is Samantha Cox but I usually go by Sammie. Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa on the north side. I grew up involved in sports (softball, volleyball, track etc.) to high school being in student council and art clubs – In middle school I was always the go-to girl with every color gel pens doodling names on binders, and I also found myself creating our 8th grade memory book High school came along and I started making every sign you could possibly think of for the hallways. From high school, I attended DMACC and worked full time in employer benefits (it was extremely hard for me to leave the corporate world) once I had my son, Reinan it was a whole different sacrifice. I wanted to be able to stay at home and raise him, so I took my favorite hobby for years of doing makeup and started freelancing.

2.) Tell us about a challenging time in your life and what lessons you learned from it?

-One challenging time in my life is when my best friend moved to California. We were literally inseparable for 10+ years. We did EVERYTHING together and then I was alone. It taught me how to be independent. How relaxing it is to have alone time and the decisions I was able to make on my own – even though she is still my best friend and always one call away… and let me tell you, we still talk on the phone/text/facetime every day.

-Becoming an adult and not realizing what path to go to was another one I struggled with. I always maintained good grades in school, but I wasn’t sure if college was for me. In the back of my head, I really wanted to go to beauty school but I thought I should go to college for an associates or bachelors’ degree. From that, I did that learn I needed to start trusting myself. Trust my gut feeling, it doesn’t matter what others think because I know what’s meant for me. (I come from a family where college was ideal)

-Another challenging situation was becoming a first-time mother. Because if you don't know already it is a full-time job itself and becoming a mother doesn't come with a rule book. This was another challenge I still struggle with admitting. I was and could still say I am dealing with PTSD/depression but I am the type who wouldn't seek help because I wanted to be the greatest mom to my son. Being weak wasn't an option in my book for him. Going through this, I realized that I can’t pour from an empty glass. To continue having him healthy and happy, I had to take care of myself which included sacrificing what I had to and go back to doing art, expressing this form in makeup. I even went through a period of time where I didn’t do my make-up and I realized if I look better, I feel better.

3.) What motivates you to follow and pursue your passion?

-I would say my son motivates me the most. I want him to see that he can grow up to follow any path or career he wants and with hard work, he will succeed!

-Making others feel beautiful motivates me more and more. I love creating face applications and to witness their reactions when I’m finished is more than satisfying. I want women to know they are beautiful inside and out!

-My support system motivates me to keep going because there are some days I struggle and need support the most. They’re the best hype team of all time.

4.) What advice would you give to the new up and coming artist?

"Don’t be afraid to reach out to other artist and ask questions.

"Don’t ever underestimate yourself but stay humble."

"Keep going and keep practicing. Every single step matters even if they’re baby steps."

5.) What is the best advice would you give to your younger self?

It’ll always work out for the better. Every bad day, set back, will come and they’ll go. Everything will be worth it, in the end, …and the best is yet to come.

6.) Have you or how do you do you contribute to the community?

I attend any alumni events when it comes to my graduating high school. Recently was an alumni vs student’s volleyball game. I’m always looking to support local brands and businesses. I’m working on a project for prom and hoping to do a few faces for girls from North High School.

7.) Who do you look up to besides your parents?

My cousin Stephanie, she is one entrepreneur who is solid proof that coming from nothing and building a dream ground up is achievable. Every day she amazes me with everything she does to stay on her feet and make it for her and her family.

8.) What are your goals for the next 5 years?

My goals include graduating from beauty school, owning my own full-service studio where other women can unwind and relax.

9.) How did you get into make-up?

I've always loved art and makeup is another form of being creative. Make-ups is a relaxing mechanism for me.

10.) What is your top 3 favorite brand of make-up?

NYX, MORPHE, & BH COSMETICS

11.) What makeup product can’t you live without?

ANASTASIA BROW POMADE

12.) What makes you so passionate about make-up?

Being able to make others as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside.

13.) What is your motto in life?

"DISCOVERING ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT DOESN'T MEAN YOU DIDN'T DO YOUR BEST. IT JUST MEANS THAT NEXT TIME YOUR BEST WILL BE EVEN BETTER”

-Sammie Cox

14.) How did you find out about Made4Mankind Clothing?

MJ (Founder of Made4Mankind) and I used to work together back in our Footlocker days, she once told me about her mission and idea to start up Made4Mankind Clothing and once it was up and running her and Aaron (Co-Founder) reached out to me to model a couple pieces. I was also involved in their fashion show which was great!

15.) What do you know about Made4Mankind Clothing?

Made4Mankind is all about helping within the community amongst one another, making a change for the better.  It is not just a clothing brand, there is so much background to Made4ManKind and meaningful information the whole world should discover about them.
