SOPHI CAVAN (TATTOO ARTIST)
1.) Tell us about yourself and your childhood?
My name is Sophi Cavan, I'm 44 years old. I was born in Vientiane, Laos. I came to the United States in 1975. I had a wonderful childhood, great parents, and two brothers and two sisters. My father was the encourager, the strength that pushed me to succeed in everything I did. He was strict but also had a great sense of humor. My mother was the nurturer and she always taught us life lessons through sharing her own experiences. They both would show us unconditional love and that's where I got my parenting skills from. In school, I graduated early and pursued college at Drake University right after. I always loved art but didn't know what would be a successful career for this so I decided to get my associates in Liberal Arts until I decided on a Career. I met my ex-husband when I turned 23 and moved to Marshalltown, Iowa. In the beginning, I started practicing tattoos on him just for fun. I practiced for two years and felt I had enough experience to open up my own business. I researched how to open a tattoo shop which is really hard doing on your own, but I found a small inexpensive shop to start my first tattoo parlor on November 2nd, 1999. It started off slow for the first couple years and then became more successful. in 2007, I went through a divorce and decided to leave Marshalltown and go back to my hometown Des Moines, Iowa. I didn't have a shop right away so I worked at Expo II extreme for a few months and decided that I was going to open up my own business again. With the help of my great friends and family, I opened up my current shop Rumors Tattoos in April of 2008 and still successful running it.
2.) Tell us about a challenging time in your life and what lessons you learned from it?
Divorce with children was my most challenging life lesson. During the divorce, I had four children I had to take care of. I decided to leave my business to my ex-husband and move back to my hometown. I started out in Des Moines living with my brother and his family, which I was thankful to him for, but I also felt like a burden and out of place. The struggle of coming to a town that no one knew your artwork was very hard. I had to rebuild myself again. With hard work and great family and friends, I built up my reputation again. The life lesson I learned from this experience was to be independent and to not ever lose yourself and always move forward, not backward.
3.) What motivates you to follow and pursue your passion?
My children, all I try to succeed for is because of my family and everything I do, I do for them. Also, we can't forget that money is a big motivation. Truthfully, money does make the world go around and happiness comes from that 100.
4.) What advice would you give to the new up and coming artist?
"Push yourself, work hard, and know you're never the best but always keep going forward. Your only competition is yourself."
- Sophi Cavan, Rumors Tattoo
5.) What is the best advice you would give to your younger self?
I don't think I would change a thing. I think everything that happens, happens for a reason, mistakes are made for us to learn from and just know that you will succeed in the future.

6.) Have you or how do you contribute to the community?
I have done many gift certificates for benefits. Some of these benefits are for loved ones that have passed and takes us back a notch and we need help to get back up.
7.) Who do you look up to besides your parents?
My eldest sister, she was the first to inspire me in art and give the best advice anytime I need it. She is very wise and always there for me anytime I needed her.
8.) What are your goals for the next 5 years?
I plan on teaching my daughter everything I know about my business and expanding my business so I can get other artists to work here.
9.) What is your motto in life?
"Hard work pays off in more ways than one."
10.) How did you find out about Made4Mankind Clothing?
I found out about Made4Mankind Clothing from one of my old clients.
11.) What do you know about Made4Mankind Clothing?
I don't know much about the history of Made4Mankind Clothing but I do know that the owners are great and they have nice apparel. I did a little research as well and the clothing line seems to be about all our differences in our lives are just the story we write, inside we are all human.
12.) Describe Made4Mankind Clothing in one word.
